Sealants aren't just for kids—these protective coatings can help patients of all ages reduce their risk of tooth decay. Among the various Smileservices and procedures that are offered by Dr. David Salah, your Novi, MI, dentist, sealants can keep your smile in its best possible shape!

What are sealants?

Although your toothbrush does a good job of removing plaque from your teeth, the bristles can't possibly reach all of the tiny pits and grooves in your pre-molars and molars. Due to the back-mouth location of these teeth, you are more likely to develop cavities in them if plaque becomes trapped in their bumpy surfaces.

Fortunately, sealants reduce your cavity risk by filling in and smoothing pits and grooves with a plastic-based resin material. After the clear liquid resin is brushed on the teeth, your Novi dentist uses a curing light to harden the sealants. What results is a smile that will stay healthier for years to come!

What advantages do sealants provide?

Sealants offer several important benefits, including:

  • No Plaque Build Up: Plaque and bacteria can't find their way into the pits and grooves when your teeth are protected by sealants. Since pre-molars and molars are the most common site of cavities, covering these teeth with sealants offers a significant benefit for your oral health.
  • Fewer Fillings: Your dentist treats cavities by removing the decayed part of your tooth and replacing it with a filling. Although fillings preserve and protect your teeth, they also weaken the teeth slightly and increase the likelihood that you'll need another dental procedure in the future. With your pre-molars and molars protected, you'll have fewer cavities.
  • Cost Savings: It's usually cheaper to apply sealants to teeth than it is to fill them. If you have a large filling, you may need to add a crown to the tooth, which increases your cost.
  • Protection for Kids and Adults: Although sealants are often used to protect your children's newly erupted molars and pre-molars, there's no reason that they can't be applied to your teeth too. Dental insurance may not cover sealants for adults, but many people think the relatively inexpensive cost of sealants is a small price to pay for fewer cavities.
